For the latest feature in our Beauty Guru series, Geoffrey Rodriguez lets us in on the best secrets to preventing and repairing dry skin.

Dry, itchy, irritated skin is a problem everyone contends with during the harsh winter months. Extreme conditions and temperatures outdoors and indoors contribute to this rather unpleasant seasonal occurrence. The following tips and products are specifically targeted to combat dry skin and will leave you glowing, smooth and hydrated year round.

Darphin – Lipid Enriched Cleansing Cream and Lipid Enriched Moisturizer
For daily use on dry sensitive skin, cleanse and moisturize with Darphin’s Lipid Enriched Cleansing Cream and Lipid Enriched Moisturizer for the body. The wonderful cleansing cream provides essential moisture to gently but effectively cleanse without further drying the skin. The soothing body balm nourishes with the richness of Shea butter, and both products are enriched with the soothing properties of Bisabolol, a natural anti-irritant that helps administer ingredients transdermally, as well as Liquorice extract to help with redness and Mimosa extract, which is a natural softener. This product helps visibly restore suppleness, while helping strengthen the skin’s natural moisture barrier—all complemented by a delicate aromatic veil. There’s also a deodorant that’s ideal for extra sensitive armpits.

ESPA – Pink Hair and Scalp Mud
Don’t overlook the hair and scalp, which can definitely take a beating this time of year. Pink Hair and Scalp Mud from ESPA—the UK’s premiere spa authority—is an intensively nourishing hair and scalp treatment that moisturizes and conditions the hair, scalp and body. The product has definitely achieved worldwide recognition for its amazing soothing and healing properties through a combination of red and white clay as well as essential oils, which leave the hair smooth and soft. The white clay, or kaolin, stimulates circulation of the scalp while the addition of soothing watercress leaves the entire head calm and comfortable. The essential oils of apricot kernel work to moisturize and condition the hair for improved manageability. It’s the perfect conditioning treatment for dry hair and, most importantly, can be used on a variety of uncomfortable skin ailments and conditions, including sunburn, eczema and psoriasis.

REN – Osmotic Infusion Ultra-Moisture Day Cream
For regular travelers or those with a very hectic lifestyle, REN’s Osmotic Infusion Ultra-Moisture Day Cream was specifically formulated with a unique regulator that carries water deep into the skin for long-lasting moisture. Phytostimuline from Beech Bud and hyaluronic acid further increase the skin’s ability to retain moisture. Ceramide, phospholipids and Omega 6 aid in boosting the skin’s repair functions while restoring softness along with REN’s exclusive Global Protection Complex, which purifies and protects the skin against premature aging. For extremely exhausted, dehydrated or jet-lagged, skin try REN’s Synergy 012 Restoring Facial Serum—this blend of pure Rosa Damascena Oil, Ximenia, Rose-hips, Jojoba, Soya, Macadamia, Rice-germ and Arctic Cranberry locks in vital moisture and therefore prevents dehydration. For everywhere else, each of REN’s superior body moisturizers are formulated with 100% bioactive ingredients to deliver incredible hydration.

Arcona – Hydrating Serum
Athletes and perhaps anyone else with an active outdoor lifestyle will certainly benefit from Arcona’s Hydrating Serum. This amazing skin hydrator locks in moisture to maximize the benefits of daily hydration and replenishes lipids that have been lost from aging, stress and environmental damage. Moisture is attracted and bound to the skin with hyaluronic acid and the soothing properties of Manuka honey, while vitamins and amino acids assist in cellular regeneration—essential for repairing damaged, dehydrated skin.

Korres – Thyme Honey 24-Hour Moisturizing Cream
If you’re looking for something ultra-light in texture, try Korres’ Thyme Honey 24-Hour Moisturizing Cream for ultra-rich yet weightless option. Vegetable oils and antioxidants regenerate and replenish the skin to reverse the signs of aging. Thyme Honey is extremely rich in vitamins, amino acids and flavinoids, so it provides antioxidant protection while attracting and absorbing water with polysaccharides to regulate and ensure optimal hydration. The process is further enhanced with olive oil, which is almost identical in chemical structure to our own skin lipids, combined with the antioxidants of grapeseed extract, thyme, vitamin E and squalene (an olive oil derivative that increases elasticity). Macadamia nut oil is also added to rebalance dryness without clogging pores.

Jane Iredale – Lip Drink
Lips are often the worst effected by extreme conditions. Jane Iredale’s non-petroleum based Lip Drink is the perfect hydrating solution for this tender part of the mouth. This fantastic lip balm contains the anti-oxidants of green tea and vitamins E and C in a base of rich Macadamia nut oil that is combined with edible zinc for sun protection. Orange and lemon oils have also been added for a delightful and refreshing natural taste. To gently exfoliate your lips, try Jane Iredale’s Sugar & Butter Lip Exfoliator/Plumper, which uses organic brown sugar to gently remove dry skin as peptides and Shea butter moisten and plump. Cool mint and ginger have also been added to stimulate circulation.

For lips, also try using a soft children’s toothbrush combined with a drop of gentle cleanser or moisturizer to gently exfoliate while in the shower.

Final notes: Regularly dry brushing of the skin before showering or bathing is key. Dry brushing removes the surface layer of dry skin and prepares the skin to be more absorbent for hydration. Dry brushing also stimulates circulation and lymphatic drainage, which aids in eliminating toxins. Natural bristle brushes are essential and are conveniently available at drugstores, health food and specialty shops. Lastly, try to avoid excessive amounts of caffeine and alcohol, which are known diuretics. Hot water with lemon is extremely hydrating and balances the body’s alkaline level, while water with lemon, mint and cucumber may be a more refreshing option.
