Beauty Guru: Hues of 2011

Geoffrey Rodriguez

We’re looking forward to a very colorful year ahead. Pantone, the world’s leading authority on color, has named “honeysuckle” as the official color of 2011. Women have historically gravitated toward wearing and purchasing brighter shades of lip color—particularly red, during wartime—so this cheerful and uplifting, rich reddish-pink hue will hopefully instill confidence and courage during these uncertain times. Spring/summer ‘11 runways, meanwhile, were awash in vibrant colors and accompanied by fresh, accessible beauty trends that complement this rejuvenated palette. Bold lip-color has, once again, proven to be an important beauty trend as has vibrant eye shadow, eyeliner and other standout features: Pat McGrath’s ‘70s glam-inspired eyes at Nina Ricci featured intensely rich tones of plum and pink blended on the eyelids, while Peter Philips took a much more minimalist approach at Jil Sander by punctuating flawless bare complexions with whimsical yet impeccably applied hot pink lip color. While most of us are still heavily immersed in cold grey winter weather, the onset of Hollywood’s glamorous award season should also be an indication of how uplifting a bright lip color or vibrant shade of blush or eye shadow can make you feel—even in the coldest and greyest of non-red carpet conditions. The following selection of enticing and inspiring colors for Spring 2011 is indeed something to be excited about and look forward to.

Chanel
When it comes to capturing the essence of the season, Chanel delivers the most delightful and wearable shades of color cosmetics, in addition to superior and innovative formulations and textures that rank among the best on the market. The exquisite Les Perles de Chanel collection for s/s ’11 lives up to this stellar reputation with limited edition shades of the label’s signature products. Standout, eye-catching color statements from the series include the Quadra Eye Shadow in Regard Perlé, the ultra-rich Rouge Allure lip-color in Flamboyante and Coquette as well as the Jouer Contraste blush in Espiégle, the perfect shade of peachy-pink with the most delicate pearl finish.

Dex New York Cosmetics
Traditional mineral cosmetics commonly contain ingredients that can create a grey or ashy appearance, which is particularly more noticeable on darker skin-tones. Dex New York, however, has created an exclusive and highly effective mineral formulation that delivers the most natural results. And it’s also an incredible resource for vibrant color, taking inspiration from the world of high fashion as well as from the colorful sights and sounds of New York City nightlife. The mineral loose pigment eye shadows, lipsticks (Coney Island Cotton Candy—a very vibrant pink—gets our highest ratings) and pressed mineral blushes are all fantastic. Also worth noting: each of Dex New York’s exclusive formulations are paraben free and are also infused with beneficial anti-aging ingredients.

Nars
Nars has always been a leader for innovative color as well as wearable textures and formulations. Although largely inspired by earth tones, Nars’ s/s ‘11 collection is punctuated with amazingly cool accents such as a vivid parrot green aptly named Celebrate as well as a vivid blue called Palladium, both of which are available in the Soft Touch Shadow Pencils that have become one of the brand’s most beloved easy application products. Also, Nars’ bright cotton-candy Angelika and peachy-pink Super Orgasm lip glosses were created after the brand’s uber-successful Orgasm blush. Both are the ideal for that little pop of vibrant color everyday.

Tarte
Appropriately known as the “high-performance naturals,” Tarte continues to standout as the industry’s leader in natural cosmetics. Tarte has also recently released some of the most desirable shades of color cosmetics available in any category. The brand’s exclusive formulations—such as the incredibly hydrating Lipsurgence lip pencils as well as the amazing Amazonian Clay Blushes—are equally useable and beneficial for dry, dehydrated skin as they are for oily skin, and come in the most delightful array of uplifting, vibrant shades. Stila
Stila remains an incredible resource for some of the best textures and colors in cosmetics. The Convertible Color Compacts have been the go-to cream blush among professionals and beauty aficionados alike for well over a decade. With cult-classic shades like Gerbera (a vibrant orange), Petunia (the perfect hot coral) and Fuschia, each remains as relevant today as when they were first created. This season is particularly exciting as the brand evolves its selection of versatile eye shadow trios with Bella, Going Green and After Hours making particularly bold color statements. The delightful Make me Blush, a multi-colored blush palette and Raspberry Crush Cheek and Lip Stain are also not to miss.

YSL Beauty
Whatever the season, YSL beauty has always maintained a certain reputation for captivating color. This season is no exception as the luxe brand explores a variety of exquisite combinations for the eyes, as seen in the divine Ombres 5 Lumieres eye shadow palettes (Garden of Eden, Midnight and Indian Pink are standouts), as well as some of the most incredibly rich lip colors of every possible finish (from the Rouge Pur Couture, Rouge Pur Shine and Rouge Volupté lip color collections). Also on point for exciting color this season are the Crème de Blush cream blushes. Final notes:
When wearing anything bright on the face, it is of the utmost importance that the complexion is as prepped and perfected as possible to avoid enhancing dark under-eye circles or blemishes. Also, be sure to choose only one feature to focus on with color. Vibrant shades of blush are very flexible, but the intensity of the application should be adjusted according to whatever feature you choose to emphasize.
