Balenciaga s/s '09, photo courtesy: Stylesight
Judging by the latest spring/summer collections, the fashion industry has taken a deliberately ugly turn. Dowdy or even monstrous silhouettes, discordant combinations of fabrics and colors along with unsightly hair and makeup ruled the runway, while show-goers frequently hid behind oversized glasses in a mock-display of concealment.

Follow The Pattern

Pepper and Pistol a/w '08
German duo Silvia Hillmann and Katrin Wiens produce a chromatically intoxicating, print-heavy spin on flirty garbs for their label Pepper and Pistol.

Wiens originally created textiles for brands such as Just Cavalli, Heatherette and Calvin Klein, while Hillmann designed clothing for labels such as Boudicca, and the two decided to partner up in order to create prints that they would wear themselves. "There have been plenty of graphic prints out there in recent seasons, but it's usually a lot of the same style over and over again—how many more skulls can there be?" Wiens points out. "To us, there is so much more than making a cute little dress in an interesting print."  read more »

Milan Menswear Wrap-Up: The Quiet Season

Burberry s/s '09
A mere four-day weekend, Milan men's fashion week for spring/summer '09 passed so quickly and so lightly over the fashionable horizon, one was left with the impression that it might never have actually happened. No juicy news items, no flashy catwalk tricks; our uncertain and hard times suggest that it's better to get real—well, as real as fashion can actually get on a catwalk—saving creative outbursts for a brighter future. Yet despite a host of presentations that were a little boring and a tad too safe, an evolved vision of masculinity still emerged.  read more »
