Interview: Dresscamp's Marjan Pejoski

With the recent departure of Dresscamp's original designer, Toshikazu Iwaya, the label has been re-helmed by fashion favorite Marjan Pejoski—the first non-Japanese designer to be named successor of a Japanese house. Pejoski recently unveiled his much anticipated first collection in Tokyo, a marine-themed vision inspired by the sirens of mythology as well as French artist Théodore Géricault's famous shipwreck painting Frigate de Meduse. Styled by Shun Watanabe of Vogue Hommes Japan, the collection was a nautical fantasy made up of cute, femme sailors and the sexy, coy sea creatures who were their concubines. Following the success of this debut, Pejoski sat down with JC Report to weigh in on the runway experience and tell us about working organically, managing multiple labels and the thing that makes his work worthwhile.

JC Report: Congratulations on your first show. How does it feel?

H. Lorenzo is a man revered in the fashion business for his discerning eye, and he has managed to keep his equally discerning Hollywood clientele happy for more than 23 years. What keeps this hard to please crowd coming back to his eponymous store in Los Angeles is Lorenzo's well curated merchandise of established luxury brands alongside relatively unknown, yet promising labels from far-flung locations such as Japan. On a recent buying trip in Tokyo, we caught up with H. Lorenzo for a one-on-one chat about Japanese brands, his eco-concept shop H.L.N.R. and his advice for young designers.

JC Report: You got into Tokyo just a few days ago and have already been making the rounds; what brands have you seen so far?

H. Lorenzo: I've seen Toga, Botanika (by Taishi Nobukuni) and I just came from Patrick Stephan. I'm going to take a look at Aguri Sagimori next, then go to Sister. Tomorrow I will see DressCamp and Dress 33 (by former DressCamp designer Toshikazu Iwaya). I saw Dress 33 in Paris, but I want to see it up close. I've been coming to Tokyo on these intense buying trips for five years now. I research everything beforehand and want to see the up-and-comers.  read more »

Dresscamp's Comeback

A look from Dresscamp, A/W '08

Dresscamp, and its epilepsy-inducing color and pattern frenzies were desaturated when its head designer Toshikazu Iwaya left the company last season. It's now revved up, after the house announced a successor, Marjan Pejoski, as chief designer, with Takao Yamashita of Beauty Beast as creative consultant. It is the first time to have a European designer will take the reigns at a Japanese house. The new collection from the team will be revealed later this month.

Tokyo Girls Collection (TGC) is a dizzyingly massive fashion event that sends high-profile models parading down the runway in the youthful, outlandish styles of Shibuya. Hugely successful since its inception in 2003, TGC uses "supermodel" It girls (not unlike Paris Hilton and her brood) to present five-minute shows of mid-level brands' current styles. Far from high fashion, runway fair includes items like frilly halter tops, barely-there hot pants with rhinestone-encrusted belts and leopard-print, thigh-high boots.
