Fashion Designers Against AIDS
December 11th, 2008 | Paris
Thirty three million people are infected with AIDS, and 14,000 new cases are registered each day. That approximates to one infection every six seconds, shocking figures widely publicized on December 1st for World AIDS Day. To draw further attention to the rapidly growing AIDS epidemic, French association AIDES organized La Grande Braderie de la Mode last weekend, a huge fashion clearance sale to raise money to fight this global disease.read more »

What's hot right now:
Besides my girlfriend and the first issue of The Last Magazine, I would say the New Museum's Elizabeth Peyton show, Jared Buckhiester's show at Envoy Gallery (just finished), Marco Perego's new show at Half Gallery, and I want to check out the Eggleston show at the Whitney.

Paris Fashion Week: Moody Times, Bright Signs
October 9th, 2008 | Paris
Designers at Paris Fashion Week have born the burden of making sense out of a season that, thus far, lacked a cohesive creative direction. With the dark cloud of the economic forecast hovering overhead, the mood was mirrored by cranky editors, steel gray skies and sputtering rain that weighed on the spirit of the week. But amid this gloom, several collections showed off bright signs—a welcome message from Paris to the world.Gareth Pugh decamped from London to show in Paris for the first time. His impeccably produced, Edwardian-influenced collection pulled in a wide international audience to witness his over-the-top showmanship—a worthy gamble that created an entertaining diversion at the start of the week. read more »

BLACK BASE WITH AN ACCENT
October 8th, 2008
At Givenchy, Riccardo Tisci once again featured a fierce warrior woman; this time sprinkled in Western accents such as metallic appliqués snaking up skin-tight black leggings and crystals criss-crossing mini dresses. Some of the best street looks I saw yesterday showed ladies using black as a base and accenting with punchy colors or metallics.

This fall season's androgynous mood extends beyond our favorite model Agyness Deyn, unisex labels and even the great season collections from Givenchy, Rag & Bone, Ruffian and Alexander Wang. The mood carries into accessories too, but particularly in the body jewelry of Bliss Lau. read more »

Paris Menswear Wrap-Up: The Unbearable Lightness of Being
July 3rd, 2008 | Paris
"The world is getting worse and worse. My message is: let's be happy!" Coming from the usually gloomy Yohji Yamamoto, the statement sounded both wise and uplifting—after you got over the initial shock of hearing it from him. In fact, Yamamoto's message perfectly sums up the mood of the Paris men's collections for summer 2009. The byword of the moment is "lightness," in both literal and metaphorical terms. Gone are the days of dark romanticism, it's time to welcome the era of casual dressing up as a way to lift the spirit. This shift in moods was nowhere as dramatic as at Yohji and Comme des Garçons. The first embroidered silly little slogans and loving phrases on the sleeves and collars of loose, deconstructed jackets; the second decked a cast of skinny, punky boys in shrunken jackets and flowing aprons, suggesting a priest-like but eminently funny look for the summer to come. read more »
