The New Age Of Accessories: Part I

Elle Accessories
From those YSL caged booties to Louis Vuitton's doorknob-sized beaded hoops, it's clear that we're entering a new era in accessories design. Although every recent season has had one or two notable "It" pieces, recent months have seen a rebirth of categories that had started to feel a little stale.

A red sole is no longer enough to make a statement shoe. Now your feet aren't worth walking on if they aren't clad in their own miniature sculpture—from Dior's carved tribal heels to Proenza Schouler's steely, architectural platforms. Similarly, spring's status bags have traded their logos and hardware for luxurious simplicity—the better to show off the season's coveted craftsmanship and timelessness. Jewelry, too, has moved beyond the confines of bling, giving a nod to the costume jewelry of yesteryear and all of its flamboyance, craftiness and wit.

For the next few weeks, we'll closely look at the two categories that are undergoing the biggest renaissance, jewelry and shoes. But first, we've decided to examine the medium by which their meteoric rise is being charted: the accessories press.

We love Proenza Schouler's T-Strap Sandal. The luscious caramel color is the perfect neutral hue to spruce up a dark winter palette, while the chunky architectural heel and cut out shape give it a bold look full of personality. Buy it for $795 at www.kirnazabete.com.

Proenza Schouler Talks Turkeys

SOCIALIZING: Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler.
It will be an aptly fashionable Thanksgiving for Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler. "We're growing our own," Hernandez told New York Magazine of the duo's organic farm in Massachusetts where they are harvesting their own holiday turkey. "If you're going to eat meat, you should know where it comes from," he said, adding that the pair has twenty grass-fed, free-range turkeys that they plan to sell. But don't fret — all dirty work is relegated to farm hands. read more »

For the Fortunate, Ways To Discreetly Buy Luxury

NEWS: The understated Proenza Schouler PS1 handbag.

According to Forbes, those among us who the economy hasn't hit may feel guilty or embarrassed about success in tough times. Though the Federal Reserve reported in September that U.S. household net worth dropped $2 trillion over the last year, it's still a whopping $17 trillion more than it was in 2002, which means that some — despite a beyond-volatile market — are much richer than they were less than a decade ago. Still, the crisis has forced even the well-off to rethink their shopping habits. read more »

Drafting A Finer Silhouette

If Spring 2008 fashion month was an ode to the paintbrush, Spring 2009 nodded directly at the drafting board. Architecture was all over the collections, from Proenza Schouler's literal interpretation of New York's famed Chrysler Building—in the form of a silver lame jumpsuit—to subtler references like the caged booties at Yves Saint Laurent, which reminded some of the Beijing National Stadium (known informally as The Bird's Nest).

New York Fashion Week's Stunning Surplus

Even before New York Fashion Week began, the industry was buzzing about how designers would respond to the gloomy economic climate. Many pundits predicted that the collections would follow a daring route, while others forecasted a very safe season. In the end, the week yielded a mixed bag of designs. Although the collective reception was lukewarm, designers explored a range of approaches that included new proportional horizons, gender games and sexual charm.

Blacks Find A Place On New York Runways

Marc Jacobs s/s '09
Our recent article on Italian Vogue's black issue was one of the most read in our six-year history. In fact, we've been discussing the lack of blacks in the industry since the beginning of JCR and we will not rest until diversity is no longer an issue in editorials, on the runways and in advertising.

Since living back in New York, I’ve spent the last two Christmas and New Years in the City. It was never an option to stay home during this period when I lived in Paris. And I like it better that way. Getaways seemed to just happen and it was a given that at the end of the year, you’d find yourself somewhere, usually warm for me, far away from home.
