Tattoos of Every Ink for Every Ilk

By Geoffrey Rodriguez

Whether you’re covered, curious or cautious about tattoos, there’s no denying the once secular practice has moved from subculture to mainstream culture. Of late, we’re seeing a slew of tattoo covered beauty products hitting the market. The following fashion, body art and makeup products will appeal to whatever tattoo type suits you.

Fashion
Long before the explosion of Ed Hardy, fashion has had a fascination with the world of edgy body art. Jean Paul Gaultier’s collections, for instance, have featured tattoo inspired prints over the years as well as models with stenciled facial tattoos. Of late, however, Rodarte’s spring/summer ’10 collection featured models with tribal inspired arm and wrist tattoos. At Chanel, meanwhile, Peter Phillips, the global creative director of make-up, hand drew designs on models for the s/s ’10 runway presentation. A limited collection of accompanying temporary tattoos—appropriately titled ‘Les Trompe-L’Oeil de Chanel—also feature beautiful, delicate designs of iconic Chanel images as well as oriental cherry blossoms and birds.

Body Art
If you’re tribal-curious but commitment-phobic, look no further than Earth Jagua’s Body Art Set. This rather impressive collection features the natural pre-mixed Jaqua gel extract used by indigenous tribes throughout Central and South America for body adornment. The kit also includes easy to use applicators and 16 reusable stencils along with the book Jagua: A Journey into Body Art from the Amazon by Carine Fabrius and a DVD of Pascal Giacomini’s documentary Land of Jagua—that latter two authors also being co-creators of the overall set. Earth Jaqua tattoos last from 10 to 15 days and are extremely realistic in color. This is a great way to do some experimentation before trying anything permanent.

Make-Up
Reality show diva and real life tattoo artist, Kat Von D has created her own complete line of color cosmetics—sold exclusively at Sephora. Inspired by her personal aesthetic combination of classic Hollywood glamour with a more contemporary LA rocker-chic lifestyle, the make-up is perfect for playful self-expression. Von D’s passion for the artistry of tattooing and for beauty has yielded some very interesting products. For those wishing to temporarily cover their own ink, her Tattoo Concealer is a highly pigmented, water-resistant gel that is also paraben and oil free, comes in eight shades and also works beautifully on blemishes or dark circles. A practical and informative video demonstrating Von D having her own tattoos covered is available to view online.

  1. Hi Geoffrey!
I love that you point out that there can be a relationship between tatoos and high fashion. Not all of us are biker chicks or rockers. Rather, some of us prefer to walk on the Chanel side of the street, stilettos, tatoos, and all. Thank you for this post!
