Sang A is the
latest name in a growing list of fine accessories labels to come out of
New York. Seemingly overnight (the label is only two years old), the
line has been spotted in the clutches of highly photographed
celebrities and accessorizing hard-to-please fashion editors intent on
discovering the next "It" bag. We spoke to Sang A about her bag sense,
her favored exotics, and why her bags are singing so loudly so quickly.
How do your bag designs come about?
Sang A: I have always been passionate about fashion and
luxury design. I love the strong statement the perfect accessory makes.
I found bag design to be the best way to enter into the design
industry, allowing me to focus my aesthetic in a clear way as a doorway
into the fashion business.
What characterizes your designs?
SA: My designs exude modern classicism. With clean
lines, minimal hardware, and the best skins, I design an accessory that
feels current now, and will remain so for generations to come.
Who places your bags among the coveted celebs?
SA: I have been very lucky to work with top stylists and
retailers who connect me with those "coveted celebs" such as Jessica
Simpson, Ashlee Simpson, Nicky Hilton, Mischa Barton, Rachel Roy, Keira
Knightley, Margherita Missoni, etc. Currently my PR company, Syndicate, has been integral in connecting me to the industry and top personalities.
What’s one bag every woman should have?
SA: Every woman needs the Flash parallelogram clutch.
The clean, sleek design and range of skins — from silver-mirror leather
to vintage platinum python — makes it the perfect accent to any outfit.
It is, by far, my favorite evening bag.
"Exotic" is the current buzz word when it comes to skins — what defines your version of "exotic"?
SA: My "exotic" is the product one must travel and
search for. The skin that cannot be found in midtown Manhattan, but in
a specialized tannery in Italy or France offering python, ostrich, and
alligator that is beyond gorgeous and luxurious.
JCR: You’re based in New York, but your bags are
Italian-made. With all the new regions for manufacturing, is Italy
still the gold standard?
SA: The detailing and respect that the Italians pour
into their work is unmatched. While there are great talents from NYC to
Korea, I have found that what makes Italy so strong is the many
generations of craftsmen that have led it to where it is today.
Do you subscribe to the "It" bag philosophy?
SA: Every woman has her own "It" bag. I do not subscribe
to the blanket term. Your "It" bag is personal and unique; mine is my
black crocodile River Oversize tote!
