Eco-friendly fashionistas have a new retail home: Style, Naturally: The Savvy Shopping Guide to Sustainable Fashion & Beauty. Made out of 100% recycled paper and vegetable-based ink, the volume offers a highly informative and readable look at sustainable fashion and beauty. Author Summer Rayne Oakes—an Ivy-League educated fashion model, eco-warrior, political activist, UN Youth Emissary and resident expert on both Treehugger.com and the Discovery Network’s Planet Green—is determined to see fashion work well with the environment.
In addition to explaining the basics of informed shopping (from fair trade to organically grown), Oakes showcases hundreds of her favorite designers and brands who prioritize earth-friendly materials and sustainable practices. “The idea of sustainability in the fashion and beauty industries has spontaneously erupted from all corners of the globe and there is mad cool stuff popping up everywhere,” Oakes observes. As it turns out, this “mad cool stuff” is none other than Stella McCartney, Safia Minney, Levi’s, Loomstate, Aveda, Bodkin, the Dirty Librarian and A.D. Schwarz.
Of the inspiration behind the book, Oakes explains: “I wanted to write a book that looks, feels and reads like a style guide, to reach women who love style, but may not have ‘green’ in their lexicon.” Thanks to this ethos, Style, Naturally includes more than 500 full color pictures, designer profiles, girl-on-the-street style profiles, personal stories, a global overview, product views and insider tips, making the book a stunning read. Better still, it’s also a useful tool for environmentally conscious designers, as it includes an extensive list of eco shops and other resources that go with a sustainable style.
Next up on this benevolent agenda? A beauty directory that’s expected to launch soon at www.stylenaturally.com and an upcoming line of on-trend sustainable shoes from Payless called Zoe & Zac. In the meantime, Oakes is on tour to promote the book, so check out her website to see if she’ll be passing through your city.
