Retail Watch: Comme des Garcons’ Neighborhood Flair

By JC Report

Japanese brand Comme des Garçons has just opened two new-of-a-kind Pocket Stores right smack in the middle of trendy Parisian neighborhoods Marais and Abbesses. These new locations are meant to feel like a local corner shop for the well-heeled Bobos who love their quarter, have time to sit in a café, chat about the newest trends, check out galleries and do some friendly local shopping.

In the same spirit as the label’s clothes and perfumes, the Comme des Garçons Pocket Stores are unconventional, modern and strikingly simple. Each location includes the Play collection for the whole family (tees, shirts, knitwear), small leather goods and the entire range of playful, unisex anti-perfumes (including oxygen, gold, nail polish, pure air of the high mountains, burnt rubber, tar and washing drying in the wind).

Small, white signature cubes have been fitted into each space and filled up with on-the-go pick-up products. Unlike the label’s Guerrilla Stores, which popped up then disappeared a year later, “these ones are intended to stay,” confirmed the sales assistant of the Marais store when we stopped by. He adds: “Just as with the Guerrilla Stores, the idea was to keep the spirit of the place by spending a minimal amount of money on the interiors.”
The super-petite stores are simple, clean and fun. And, because we love the iconic Play heart logo by Filip Pagowski, we’re happy to play along.
