About a Blog
April 1st, 2008 | New York
These days thousands of bloggers are offering their two cents on fashion, but few have the voice to capture and sustain our attention. Sunday, as part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's blogmode: addressing fashion exhibition, three of fashion's most high-profile bloggers—Diane Pernet, Scott Schuman and Cathy Horyn—revealed some strategies that have helped them tap into the cultural zeitgeist, and garner major traffic.First, a strong personality needs to drive content. While Diane Pernet offers us glimpses of her rarified creative world on A Shaded View on Fashion, seeing the fashion doyenne's outlandish look situated in different environments as she travels the globe is just as entertaining. But if you can't pull off wearing an all black outfit, sunglasses and a headdress, then you might explore a photographic approach like Scott Schuman of The Sartorialist. Schuman shoots on-the-street personalities with carefully arranged ensembles, inviting visitors to live vicariously through, and be inspired by, his images. New York Times writer Cathy Horyn, on the other hand, takes a more erudite tone on her On the Runway blog, and her smart fashion criticism not only engages her audience but also elicits lively debate. So if you're a wannabe fashion journo looking for fame in the virtual world, take note.
