Put A Record On: Violens' Not-So-Violent Sensations
September 29th, 2008 | New York
A recent article in the Guardian argued that fashion designers don't just set clothing trends, they also use the catwalk to showcase new and exciting music. The British newspaper mentioned artists such as MIA, Dizzee Rascal and Santogold, who were all featured in fashion shows before even being signed to a record label. If this is the case, then New York's Violens are a band set for stardom.Violens - Violent Sensation Descends from epb21 on Vimeo
Swedish fashion designer Patrik Ervell asked Violens to write the music for his spring/summer '09 show in New York, which turned out to be a perfect soundtrack for his light-colored collection. A sprinkle from the fabulous glamour of New York fashion week isn't enough in and of itself, but Violens can stand their ground without Ervell. This New York-based quartet produce a brand of psychedelic pop with great commercial potential—imagine shimmery synths, tight harmonies and symphonic feverishness. It's no surprise, then, that they've already been picked up by the same label that brought us MGMT. The two bands are touring both sides of the Atlantic this winter so be sure to catch Violens in a small venue while you still can.
The new EP includes "Violent Sensations Descends," a track with Beach Boys-esque guitar melodies and a happy-go-lucky sound. Meanwhile, "Trance Like Turn" is a tad more electronic, but still upbeat and dance-friendly. Though the band describes their sound as "descriptions of nightmares," Violens' music has somewhat the opposite effect—it will just make you happy.
