Bionda Castana's Savvy Shoe Strategy

Established in 2006, the London-based Bionda Castana is a retailer's dream. By allowing buyers to select from over 60 different fabrics—including chic satins, supple leathers and luxe exotic skins—for each available style, Bionda Castana can effectively tailor their merchandise to each store's specific market. Thus, the same vertiginous pump might be outfitted with bling accoutrements in Dubai, while it's cast in a conservatively hued matte leather for maximal appeal in Washington D.C.

Of course, a smart business strategy is only as good as what it's selling, and fortunately, Bionda Castana—which translates as Blonde Brunette in Italian, the hair colors of founders Jennifer Portman and Natalie Barbierie—is no slouch when it comes to luxe craftsmanship. For s/s '08, the collection includes a purple peep toe sandal accessorized with smoky Swarovski crystals, slides with intricate embroideries and a rich chocolate satin model with geometric cutouts.

Unlike many labels that outsource to China in order to keep manufacturing costs down, Bionda Castana's footwear is crafted exclusively in Italy by artisans with extensive experience in creating luxe shoes. It's no surprise then that with its smart business tactics and gorgeous products, the brand has quickly won some major fans. Wynn Las Vegas, Harvey Nichols in London and Boutique 1 in Dubai are already customers, as is that ubiquitous lover of stilettos, Victoria Beckham.
