Gareth Pugh’s strategic move to show his collections in Paris from London is paying off in spades. Last season, the shift resulted in Beyonce donning his futuristic wares in videos and to award shows prompting articles about her newfound fashion cred. LVMH underwrote the designer’s menswear collections; and yesterday, every major journalist turned out to view his dynamic autumn /winter ’09 collection in the form of a video presentation. Often times, showing a collection in a video format can fall flat but Pugh ensured the opposite result and went for a fast paced staccato presentation starring Natasa Vojnovic. The move brought life to the blown up shapes, pin covered leather jackets, and shredded tops paired with voluminous pants and giant pleated skirts that read less haute club wear, but more sophisticated. Matthew Stone produced the eerie, drum and bass type soundtrack with the mise-en-scene topped off with smoke billowing from the floor to depict a mood that felt like distant terrestrial landscape, not at all otherworldly.
