Alisa Ng has enjoyed searching the globe for unique fashion throughout her many years of traveling. A former vice president at Morgan Stanley’s fixed income division in New York and Hong Kong, Ng developed the idea for L-atitude during a trip to Asia in 2009 with the hope of enabling women to “shop abroad” without having to step out of their homes or offices. The company serves as an online portal that specializes in virtual shopping trips to the world’s most coveted destinations. It is an e-commerce site that offers women a unique mix of fashion and accessories from established brands, emerging designers and traditional artisans from all over the world.
What’s hot right now?
A post-recession movement away from brand-conscious purchases to a search for unique, eclectic, one-of-a kind luxury products. Beyond the “it” bag of the moment, people are interested in well-made products that have a compelling narrative and evoke an emotional response. L-atitude’s goal is to introduce authentic & unique products that “virtually” transport our customers from the streets of New York to the bazaars of Istanbul
What fashion trend should we pay attention to right now?
Is it possible to transform a fashion trend into a unique expression of personal experience? The “trend” of friendship bracelets takes hold every summer—you see them on the wrists of fashion models and bankers. It is universal. These bracelets are a visual expression of a personal experience, purchased from places they’ve been to, personal charms with their children’s initials or symbols that have meaning or evoke a memory. I personally live in my Indian mauli string bracelet with different types of charms: a lamu (hand-sign), an evil eye and Indian sikander sword. It makes me dream of future trips to India.
What do you foresee as your summer staple?
I’ve collected sarongs from Cambodia, Bali, India and Istanbul (some of them you can see on our site). I’m going to practice the art of sarong wrapping on my trips to the Bahamas and Indonesia this summer.
