James Brown has cultivated a refined retail haven with Hostem. Featuring items acquired everywhere from Perugia to LA, the store is a reflection of the cultures and individuals who inspire Brown himself. The space reflects a clear emphasis on attention to detail, where Brown supports and showcases the brands and projects that he most passionately believes in.
What’s hot right now?
I find that appeal is inversely relative to attainability, so for me what is poignant right now is if you can seek out the rare. Whether it be watching an old film such as Down by Law, directed by Jim Jarmusch’, or reading a copy of Interview from 1970 or the simplicity of listening to records from times past. The present in retrospect is always far more enchanting, because that’s when it becomes the past.
What are you looking forward to this fall in London?
The opening of the infamous Dr. Romanelli’s Prescription Shoppe at Hostem in October. He is an unbelievably talented individual so it’s great to have a platform and space where we can showcase the collaboration and products that we have been working on for the last six months.
Who are your favorite designers?
I love the artisan aspect of design. Clothing that has meaning, that has a story behind the garment—such as a pair of Visvim FBT’s created out of inspiration from original Native American Moccasins, the hand-dyed finish to an MA+ leather or the locality and closeness to home of a Curiouser + Curiouser Scarf.
